You either die a hero or remain long enough to watch yourself becoming the villain” it’s the premise of The Dark Knight. Christian Bale is now a villain, this time for Marvel’s Thor: Love and Thunder. The antagonist is strong, and the plot is faithful to the comic book storyline as well. It also reintroduces the popular character of the audience, Jane Foster (Natalie Portman). Taika Waititi’s humorous wit is evident. Love and Thunder is a movie that is a stand-alone that doesn’t compare to Thor: Ragnarok (2017).

Thor has been an integral part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for more than a decade now however, his solo films are either not hitting the target or failed to hit the mark completely. While the origins tale of Thor (2011) was an acceptable start, Thor: The Dark World (2013) was a horrendous entry. And yet, anyone’s list of top five MCU films would contain Thor: Ragnarok (2017) with a definite. The return of the Hemsworth-Taika waititi collaboration was a sign that expectations were up to par prior to the film’s release.
Gorr (Bale) Gorr (Bale), the god who wants to destroy all gods, hits New Asgard to steal Stormbreaker. Thor must stop the god butcher by joining up with Tessa Thompson, Korg (Waititi) and Jane Foster, his ex-girlfriend who has become Mighty Thor. The plot is straightforward unlike in Marvel’s recent films, and the performances are exemplary in the film. Hemsworth aces the titular character who is going through a midlife crisis, but Bale and Portman make an impact. In a testament to Bale’s talents and his eminence, the pre-title credit sequence appears. Gorr could have been the next Thanos for an MCU which is in dire need of good supervillains, and Bale brings in a certain eeriness to the character, but there’s not much of a much more.
Portman plays Mjolnir’s cancerous ex-girlfriend. Marvel appears to be keen on handing the mantles Hawkeye and Hulk to female characters. I was hoping that the Mighty Thor would be similar to the representation checklist. The film is a touching story about an astrophysicist who is able to display her biceps throughout more scenes than one.
Marvel does its own flexing through all the cameos featured in this film. Apart from the entire Guardians of the Galaxy team, we also have Matt Damon, Sam Neill, and Luke Hemsworth reprising their roles from Thor: Ragnarok as Loki, Odin, and Thor as well as Thor. We also have Melissa McCarthy and her husband Ben Falcone playing Hela and the director of an Asgardian play, respectively. Waititi, who has been directing since Ragnarok has directed Jojo, the Oscar-winning Rabbit, returns to his most loved genre, this time. It’s fun to see an image of a couple of noisy goats and Korg’s narration of Thor’s story. Thor does leg-splits. Valkyrie, Old Spice’s mascot, is introduced.
The premise is that Thor desires his Mjolnir but is afraid of Stormbreaker’s jealousy. These gags are hilarious, however they are at the expense of intense emotion. They also reveal the weak plot. Thor: Love and Thunder deals with a variety of love, from a father/daughter bond to the intricate relationship between lovers who have fallen out… It’s an analogy between Gorr losing his faith in the god he worships, Rapu, and Thor getting disillusioned by Zeus (played by Russell Crowe). There are many theories however…
There are many movie references like Harry Potter and Interstellar, as well as easter eggs. The image of Falligar, the god who died, is shown, directly from comic books. We can see Hemsworth wearing the original Thor costumes comic-book readers will recognize. When Thor wears his armor during a battle with Zeus We observe a tattoo which reads “RIP Loki as well as the trickster’s helmet etched on our space Viking’s back. We are introduced to the villainous Necrosword and also given the fact that Mjolnir and Stormbreaker seem to have the ability to think for themselves, it’s interesting to see other weapons being demonstrated to have the power to subdue the people.
We saw this with Shang Chi’s 10 rings along with Ms. Marvel’s amazing bangle and the Ebony blade that was featured in the Eternals post-credits scene. The statement “Gods do not empower you but they will use to use you” from Marvel’s latest show, Moonknight, feels very familiar. There’s even a story of Valkyrie losing her beloved girlfriend in battle and Korg becoming a lover of another Kronan man.
The first half of the film reminds us of all the color we enjoyed in Ragnarok The majority of the second part is set in a dark world, where everything is in black and white. Action scenes that are monochrome are quite enjoyable but it is imperative to remember.
Hemsworth continues to play Thor and Thor for the foreseeable future, which is a welcome relief for MCU fans who’ve witnessed the original Avengers die or hang their heads.
